Every year, around 20 winter-sports fans are killed in avalanche accidents. Avalanche risks can be assessed by linking avalanche risk levels with slope inclinations. In the study «GIS analysis of ski routes by risk level» conducted in a test area on behalf of bfu, IMPULS AG has used a geographical information system (GIS) to evaluate ski routes based on digital information.

The GIS analysis shows what share of the routes marked on ski tour guides can be assigned to which avalanche risk sector for a given risk level. With its depictions of tour options with low, elevated and high risks, the resultant “hazard map” opens up new applications at the level of ski-tour planning.

The bfu’s «GIS analysis of ski routes by risk level» is available as a PDF file in German with a French summary.
