Research Newsletter 31.05.2011 - bfu knowledge base "Fatal drowning accidents in Switzerland (2000–2010)"

For the second time, the bfu – Swiss Council for Accident Prevention is publishing an overview of fatal drowning accidents in Switzerland (2000–2010). Alongside a comprehensive description of these accidents, some insight is also given into risk factors and possible preventive measures. The purpose of this brochure is to provide specialist organisations and individuals as well as the general public with a knowledge base. In a joint effort to completely prevent child drowning accidents and markedly reduce the number of drowning victims among the adult population, the aim is to be an expedient guide.

Several organisations have contributed to the creation of this publication. Special mention should be made of the Swiss Life-Saving Society SLRG, which supplied the bfu with its statistics on drowning and contributes substantially to preventing drowning accidents in Switzerland thanks to its work.

Starting this year, the bfu would like to welcome the SLRG as a co-publisher of this brochure! Both organisations are jointly pursuing Vision Zero among children with their Water Safety campaign in 2011–2013 (water-safety.ch): in future, the aim is to eliminate the possibility of any children in Switzerland below the age of 9 drowning!

More information is available in the bfu’s basic document “Fatal drowning accidents in Switzerland, 2000–2010” (Tödliche Ertrinkungsunfälle in der Schweiz, 2000–2010) – available in French and German.
